This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Surname Variants

Barker Name Meaning English: occupational name for a tanner of leather, from Middle English bark(en) ‘to tan’, tree bark having been used as the tanning agent. English: occupational name for a shepherd, Anglo-Norman French bercher (Late Latin berbicarius, from berbex ‘ram’, genitive berbicis). With the change of -ar- to -er- in Middle English, this became indistinguishable from the preceding name. Altered spelling of German Barger or Berger.

My paternal grandfather is Coburn Elise Barker. His ancestors were from Bryson City, North Carolina. There are so many people with the surname Barker. Help me with my research.

I am interested in participating in the Barker Name Project. My ancestor Joshua p g barker born abt 1830 lists his parents as William H barker born abt 1810 in england and his mother as Elizabeth Stuart born abt 1810 Ireland. Joshua's place of birth is listed as Point Jervis NY in his pension papers, and in England in many census. I am a direct descendant from Joshua to son WilliamH, to son Frank G to his daughter Ruby May Barker my mother. I have been unable to locate any information on Joshua prior to his marriage in MA in 1857. I have most of his information after that date. Thanks, Mary Strovink Daukas
Thanks Mary, I started the project a few years ago. I don't know what to do but encourage people to buy DNA kits for all elders in their families and download the raw DNA then upload to sites such as GEDMATCH.com. I have done all the elders in my family. I will be purchasing a Y-DNA test for my father next month and hopefully enter him in a project on familytreedna.com. I have lots of research to do on the Barkers. My dad's family is from Bryson City, NC and I don't know anymore past that. Good luck on your research!
